      Tough question!

For me personally, the most important aspect of my day to day work is the way that I help other scientists to get data from electron microscopes and make advances in their research. By me focusing on how to use a piece of very specialised equipment (the electron microscope), I can help many scientists studying lots of different topics, rather than just focusing on one topic of research myself.

I’d say its the application. My work is my work, but there is a need for me to do it because of diseases such as Parkinson’s and Huntington’s, where my work can help people who suffer with these conditions.

      This made me think!
I’d say it is the impact that my work has on patients. Because I get to interact with the patients who give us samples a lot, I get to see how horrible their disease it, and how badly it affects their lives. Even just by talking to them, and explaining my research to them, it gives them hope for the future. So anything I do in the lab to improve their disease is so important to me.

I’d also say the impact it can have on the patients. When you hear of someone you treated being disease free a couple of years later it really does feel good!

The most important thing I need to do my job is probably concentration and not to get complacent. When I have days where I just have to check patients’ treatment plans all day I might do 20 – 30 in a day, and the vast majority of them are completely fine, so its easy to switch off and miss something.
