In my case I normally just wear a shirt, trousers and shoes – no tie as you have to be bare below the elbow in healthcare! I just think it’s important to be comfortable, if it’s boiling hot and you’re sat in overall or a jumper or something then your concentration is going to suffer!
I’ve cheekily started wearing a polo shirt when it’s warm, no-ones said anything yet so its all good 🙂
I like the way you think Sophie!
Yes I think so. If I am going to be in the lab all day, I normally wear jeans and a t shirt, so I am comfortable. Also comfy shoes are a must, as I spend most of the day on my feet.
If I have meetings then I dress a bit more smartly. It feels weird being in the lab in fancy clothes!
I have to wear a lab coat over my clothes, which is nice, because the lab is normally really cold!
Yes, definitely! Some of the labs I work in are very hot, so summer clothes help me to deal with the heat, and lab coats help stop the spreading of dust and anything else that could contaminate the lab.
When working with chemicals and cells I wear a lab coat, which is much more sterile than any personal clothes as they are extremely clean!
In our office we have the ‘Fez of Shame’, named after the ‘Cone of Shame’ in the film Up! If someone says something particularly silly (or accidentally gives away game of thrones spoilers), then they have to wear the fez for a while. So perhaps the fez hat helps me work better because it stops me saying the first silly thing that comes into my head!
