It’s actually the doctors job to tell the patient. We plan and deliver the radiotherapy treatment in a safe manner, after that they may also have other treatments that aren’t anything to do with us, its the doctor that has the overall view of their situation.

Patients do ask questions though. My wife is a radiographer so shes one of the people that actually delivers the treatment so she sees a lot of patients. She’ll often get asked questions like ‘how bad is it?’ but she cant tell them either way. If she says they’ll be fine and then they’re not fine then she’ll get blamed and if she tells them its bad news they’re just going to get upset and distressed. Occasionally she’s had to treat young children, which is hard enough as it is, but then has the parents asking questions. It’s hard!
